While creative professionals would agree that Adobe’s technology is state-of-the-art, its pricing plans make it tempting for users to explore other options. Before you make a decision, though, you might want to give this trick a go.
Fstopper staff writer Andy Day stumbled upon the method by accident when he was considering making to the switch to photo editing software Capture One. He wondered what would happen if he attempted to cancel his Adobe subscription, so he went ahead and tried to do so—but was warned he would have to pay a rather steep fee for an early cancelation of his annual plan.
To his surprise, he was also shown a number of options to prevent him from quitting his subscription. One of them was the offer of two months thrown in for free.
However, for a better deal, you might want to hit the “custom deal” option to get a tailored subscription from an Adobe agent.
Day selected the option, which launched a live chat with a representative. He then explained that he was planning to switch from Lightroom to Capture One because of the latter’s ease of use, and that he was thinking of purchasing Affinity Photo since he only occasionally used Photoshop.
The agent replied that there were “three free months on your subscription that haven’t been applied yet,” and asked if he was interested in taking up the offer.
“From having randomly wondered what would happen if I tried to cancel my Adobe subscription… a few minutes of clicking and chatting had saved myself just under $40,” Day related.
He later recommended the option to a coworker, who struck a better deal and ended up with an annual subscription of the full Adobe suite at half the price.
It’s worth noting, though, that this method is quite risky and can result in an actual termination of your membership, so you might want to give it a try only when you’ve found software alternatives you really like.
A safer way to clinch a discount, as Day points out, is to upload at least 300 stock photos or videos by the end of the year, which could entitle you to a full year of the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan.
“Contributors that have more than 300 accepted assets between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019 will receive a bonus in addition to any royalty payments: a one-year subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan featuring both Lightroom and Lightroom Classic as well as the latest version of Photoshop!” Adobe explains in a blog post.
