Apple’s CEO Tim Cook announced that the company successfully secured over 20 million face masks from its supply chains worldwide to tackle the shortage in medical supplies. On top of that, the Cupertino giant is going above and beyond to begin manufacturing face shields to protect healthcare workers.

“Apple is dedicated to supporting the worldwide response to COVID-19,” Cook informed in a video posted on Twitter. “We’ve now sourced over 20 million masks through our supply chain.”

He then detailed that the face shields are designed to be flat in order to be shipped easily with around 100 units per box. They are also made to be assembled quickly by healthcare professionals within two minutes.

The first batch has been sent out to Kaiser hospital facilities in the Santa Clara Valley.

Apple plans to ship over a million of these face shields by the end of this week and will continue to produce more in the following week. The company has also teamed up with the government and medical professionals to make sure the face shields get delivered to places where they are needed the most.
