The “world’s largest soccer stadium” is poised to be set up in Guangzhou, China. The ceremony for the massive stadium took place on 16 April.
Its design is inspired by the shape of the lotus flower, which represents Guangzhou—also known as the Flower City. The project will reportedly cost US$1.7 billion., and was proposed by Evergrande Group’s president Jiayin Xu and conceptualized by Gensler’s Design Principle Hasan A. Syed.
While it drew widespread criticism by the architectural community who had lashed out about the “outdated taste of high-profile clients,” the public, however, has voiced support for the design as it believes it has represented the Chinese culture well.
The stadium will be home to the Chinese Football Association’s Super League team, Guangzhou Evergrande, named after the Evergrande real estate group. The facility will also include 100,000 seats and 162 VIP boxes, with a capacity that will surpass Barcelona’s Camp Nou in Spain.
The construction of the stadium is set to complete by the end of 2022, with hopes of hosting the 2023 Asian Cup.
