CNLP 298: Alejandro Reyes on Hypergrowth and the Keys to Great Digital Marketing and Online Influence

What makes people stand out online? How do you get noticed in a world that’s so noisy? The foundations of digital marketing are surprising…not because of how trendy they are, but because of how enduring they are.

Digital marketing expert and entrepreneur, Alejandro Reyes, talks about what makes companies and individuals grow online and shares lessons he learned from working in a hypergrowth environment of a $100 million dollar startup.

Nearly every church leader I know is concerned with “closing the back door” at his or her church, but the “front door” is usually the bigger issue. To see growth, you need more new guests each year than your total average attendance on a Sunday. It takes intentionality to reach people outside the church and outside the faith. That’s where The Unstuck Group comes in. To hear more about Connexus Church’s experience working with The Unstuck Group or to learn more about their process, head to TheUnstuckGroup.com/Guests.

What if, in 40 days, you could grow your small groups in your church by 40%? Based on Pastor Zach Zehnder’s book, The Red Letter Challenge is a 40-day turnkey church campaign that centers around making more effective disciples of Jesus. 3 Insights from Alejandro

1. There’s a big difference between a know-it-all and a learn-it-all

There’s a big difference between a know-it-all and a learn-it-all. A know-it-all says, “I’m just going to do my thing and not look for advice, not go to YouTube, not listen to podcasts.” They’re always cynical about people’s ideas.

But the learn-it-all says, “You know what, I want to go out there, and I want to study the greats. I want to study under anyone and everyone I can, because everyone has value, everyone has something to say.” You will go a lot farther in life if you are a learn-it-all rather than a know-it-all.

2. Your nos define you, not your yeses

One of the most valuable lessons Alejandro learned from working at Pushpay was the ability to live and die by his daily calendar; to say ‘no’ to the things that shouldn’t be on it. All of his priorities lived on his daily calendar, and if it wasn’t on his calendar, it wasn’t getting done. He believes that this was key to his success at such a high-paced organization.

When you work in a high-speed culture, people understand that everyone runs at a fast pace and can’t afford many distractions. Therefore, interruptions to your calendar are much less common. But when they do happen, you have to have margin built in for “the unexpected.” So, say yes to the right things and no to things that don’t impact the bottom line.

3. When letting someone go, they should see it coming from a mile away

Alejandro would always say that anyone who is going to be fired should never be surprised that it’s coming. You should be able to say, “Hey, we’ve gone through a 90-day process, we’ve given you a coaching plan, you’ve signed it, we’ve had one-on-ones, we’ve met together, and unfortunately, we’re going to have to part ways here.”

If you have not exhausted every opportunity to level people up, that is absolutely poor form. Because churches are usually understaffed by half a lot of times. So, many leaders say, “Oh, man, I don’t have time for one-on-ones, I don’t have time to engage and build people up.” Alejandro would say that that is one of the worst things that leaders can do is to not spend time with their people and help them grow and level up their leadership.

Get Your Life Back

Do you want to unlock more of your potential in life and leadership without sacrificing time with your family and your health?

Sounds crazy, but it’s not. I know because I’ve lived it. A few years back, I seriously crashed and burned because the demands on my time and life were bigger than the time I had to accomplish them. I promised myself that wouldn’t happen again.

Today, I still have bigger goals than ever before, but I’ve made fundamental changes that have led to a healthier, happier lifestyle without sacrificing my family and vastly increasing my productivity at work. I’ve taken what I’ve learned during this journey and put it into the High Impact Leader course.

You can complete the three-hour course at your own pace. It’s the most comprehensive content I’ve ever created for leaders to help you reclaim HOURS every day so you can become more effective at work and more present at home. When your time, energy, and priorities are all working together for you, it’ll impact everything you do.

  • You become a better leader, because you’re doing what you do best when you’re at your best
  • You become a better spouse, because you’re focused at home
  • You become a better parent, neighbor, and friend, because you actually have time off to relax and engage

These principles will free you to thrive in every area of your life.

Next Episode: Patrick Lencioni

Patrick Lencioni is a widely-recognized leadership and business expert who has sold over 6 million books. But none of that exempts you from your own personal challenges. Today, Patrick opens up about a painful personal leadership crash he experienced 11 years ago, what brought him to that moment, and how he got through it. We also discuss why a leader’s motives matter so much and why most CEOs and senior leaders fail to really lead once they become the senior leader.
