What is Threads by Meta?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks, you’ll have heard by now about social platform newbie, Threads. Launched with very little warning, on the 5th July, Meta treated us to a whole new online world. With an estimated user base of 100 million in such a short amount of time, it’s definitely not an outlet that brands should be overlooking when it comes to their social strategy.
Threads profiles have to be linked to an Instagram profile, yet offer brands and individuals a more casual place to share content, unlike on your grid where people tend to only share polished images and Reels.
This new platform has been likened to Twitter by both the press and masses of individuals online, with many similarities to the platform that launched 17 years earlier in 2006. Threads is said to offer a similar but more simplistic and stripped back service than Twitter. Images, videos, and gifs can all be shared on Threads, alongside simple, standalone notes. Hashtags have not yet been added.
How do I set up a Threads account?
Setting up a profile is easy, with Instagram doing the majority of the work for you. All you need to do is download the Threads app and proceed to connect this with your existing Insta profile. From here, you can choose to import your bio or create a new one. Additionally, you can also opt to follow everyone you’ve followed over on Instagram or start from scratch. Once this process has been completed, you’re ready to start Threading! If you need guidance with this process, our digital marketing agency in Essex is here to help!
How does Threads differ from Twitter?
Despite being very similar, there are a few key differences between Twitter and Threads. As such, your strategy for these platforms should somewhat differ from one another. Afterall, they are still two different outlets run by very different algorithms.
Below, we’ve noted the biggest differences…
Private messaging
Unlike Twitter, Threads doesn’t currently allow you to send private messages to other users. It is still early days for Threads, however, with many bugs to be fixed and changes to be made. It’s speculated that the app was released earlier than Meta had originally planned, as a reaction to Elon Musk’s (Owner of Twitter) decision to limit the amount of posts you can read on the rival app. As such, this may be a feature that Threads are looking to implement down the line, so watch this space.
Limitations on reading
As mentioned above, Elon Musk has recently made the decision to limit the number of Tweets accounts can read each day, depending on the type of account you have and it’s age.
- New users (unverified) – 300 Tweets per day
- Unverified accounts – 600 Tweets per day
- Verified accounts – 6000 Tweets per day
This seems like a pretty weird decision, right? I mean, why would anyone limit the amount of time someone spends on their app? It’s reported that this decision was made as a way for Twitter to defend the platform against bots, not because they’re trying to limit your social media intake. Meanwhile, Threads currently has no limit, allowing users to enjoy as much or as little time here as they wish.
Advanced search features
As we mentioned earlier, Threads, in its current state, is much more stripped back than Twitter. Many people have even commended this decision, saying it is like old-school social media. This being said, its meant that Twitter remains one step ahead when it comes to advanced searching functions. Threads also currently lacks a ‘trending’ section.
Does my company need to be posting on Threads?
When it comes to social media, we always say that it’s important for brands to be where their audience are. With Threads appealing to such a wide variety of individuals globally, it’s highly likely you will see a benefit from utilising this platform.
With sharing on Threads, it’s important that you’re keeping this casual, light, and fun. This is a real opportunity for you to showcase your brands personality, network, and get involved in some interesting conversations.
