Donald Trump’s childhood home is surprisingly not as coveted as its seller thought it’d be, likely because it is twice the median sale price of the houses in the Queens neighborhood.
The 2,000-square-foot Jamaica Estates house will start renovation on 14 October 2019, and the seller has already set a price for the house. Those interested in the dwelling can now submit written offers along with a refundable 10-percent deposit for it.
The current key holder of the house purchased it at US$2.14 million back in 2017, when the surrounding single-family houses in the neighborhood were priced at a comparably low US$980,000 each.
According to Misha Haghani, principal of Paramount Realty USA, the house itself is worth about “US$1 million.”
But he claims that the price should go beyond the million because it is not just “real estate,” but rather “a dream, a collectible, something that is meaningful to a lot of people.”
He also believes that it will be either a Trump fan or protester who will eventually purchase the house, as none of the previous buyers had any intention of staying.
When the house was listed in February, it was marked at US$2.9 million but was shortly withdrawn from the market after just 10 days.
It also failed as a listing on Airbnb, as its asking price was set at a lofty US$725 per night. The five-bedroom Tudor was even decorated with Trump trinkets and life-size cutouts of Trump himself.
The price for the property has wavered since real-estate investor Michael Davis bought the house in 2016, right before Trump’s inauguration, at US$1.4 million.
That price tag was already 78 percent more than the amount it was traded for in 2008, which was US$782,500. Davis then handed the house over to the current owner, making 54 percent in profits.
Though it’s a gamble if the asking price will be met, Haghani stands by Trump’s childhood home. He even declared that anyone who is able to guess the sale price as accurate as possible will be offered US$10,000.
According to him, since it is the third time the house is going up for sale, he would like to “have some fun with it.”
