There’s no doubt about it, it’s more important than ever to have a solid digital marketing strategy underpinning all of your digital marketing efforts [and yes, we mean all of ‘em].
Whether you’re a small business of one, a service-based business, an ecommerce business or a larger corporate organisation, having a digital marketing strategy is no longer an option – it’s a necessity. A study by Sensis in 2020 found that 79% of small businesses in Australia have a social media presence and we’d put money on that number having increased in recent years.
Let’s get down to business – here are 5 reasons why you need a digital marketing strategy.
Reason #1: It’s where your customers are
As of October 2022, the average Australian spends a whopping average of 6 hours and 13 minutes per day on the internet. Further to that, 75% of Australians went online to do their shopping.
If that’s still not quite enough to convince you, Australia has 23.60 million internet users – 89% of our total population. Social media users are not far behind, making up around 82.7% of the population.
Numbers aside, think about your own purchasing journey – how often do you find a new brand or product on social media, or perhaps head on over to Google to find a product or service to suit your needs? By leveraging all of the digital marketing solutions available to, you can reach potential customers far beyond the powers of traditional marketing methods.
Reason #2: It’s cost-effective, measurable and data-driven
Digital marketing channels have allowed marketers and business owners to tap into cost-effective solutions, which in most cases are more affordable than traditional marketing methods. That’s not to say that traditional marketing methods and cross-channel strategies don’t play an important role, but when resources are tight it makes sense to dedicate budgets that will give you the most bang for your buck. For example? The average ROI through email marketing is $36 for every $1 spent.
Another key drawcard for having a digital marketing strategy is that once you’ve clearly outlined your objectives, it is much easier to directly track and attribute a return on your investment when compared to traditional marketing methods.
Digital marketing channels also allow you to get your message out there much faster than traditional marketing methods. That’s not even mentioning the depth of data available at your fingertips, giving you the ability to optimise, adjust and scale your marketing much more effectively.
Reason #3: It helps you remain competitive
Long gone are the days of winging it on social media or other digital platforms. It’s more important than ever to have a strategic and deliberate approach to your digital marketing activity. By not showing up strategically? You’re effectively giving your competitors a leg up in the competition.
Don’t believe us? Here’s where your competitors are showing up:
With so many businesses are showing up and competing for audience’s attention, this is why you need a digital marketing strategy. And to help you out? Here’s a blog post we’ve prepared earlier for you on how to actually develop one.
Reason #4: It allows you to be…well, more strategic
You may be thinking this reason’s a tad self-explanatory, but it doesn’t hurt to cover all our bases. Having a digital marketing strategy allows you to identify your target audiences, what your objectives are and where you should be focusing your marketing efforts.
For example, if you place an advertisement on TV, in a magazine or on a billboard, you have limited control over who sees the ad. Digital marketing on the other hand, allows you to identify and target a highly-specific audience with personalised messaging [if you’ve clearly outlined who your target audience is in your strategy, of course].
Reason #5: It’s easier to be agile and adapt
Preparing and rolling out traditional marketing strategies can be quite time-consuming, and once it’s rolled out? You often have to follow through with that strategy until completion and only then can you measure the results and adjust your approach for future efforts.
And let’s face it, things don’t always go as planned. One of my favourite parts of digital marketing it the ability to adjust, to optimise and to adapt your approach. Once you have some delivery under your belt, you’re able to evaluate what’s working and adjust accordingly – whether that’s targeting adjustments, budget changes or revamping your creative and messaging.
