Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele flaunted ancient Greek and Roman-inspired looks at the label’s Cruise 2020 runway, not forgetting to spotlight women’s reproductive rights following restrictive abortion bills signed in several states of America.

One of the defining pieces of the show was a sweater with the date “22.5.78” emblazoned on the front, an allusion to “the Italian statute for the social protection of motherhood and the voluntary interruption of pregnancy, better known as statute 194,” as Gucci explained on Instagram.

Another blazer showed a direct pro-choice stance, spelling out “My Body My Choice” in large letters at the back. The phrase is a feminist slogan from the 70s, Gucci added.

A cream floor-length gown displayed an embroidered uterus motif on the front, designed to reflect the creative director’s vision of “freedom, equality and self-expression.” The graphic was lined in red, showing flowers where the ovaries are.

The pieces were part of Gucci’s Chime for Change campaign, which aids “projects around the world to support sexual and reproductive rights.”

This is the first time Gucci has made such bold statements on abortion rights through fashion, and may just be the beginning.
