We are in the midst of a pandemic and this will have widespread implications on the economy. While small and local businesses have been greatly affected by the lockdown, some industries have been impacted a lot more than others. Brands and companies are using this time to think of ways they can get back on their feet.
For people in the Digital Marketing industry, things are not as bad. While the industry had a few setbacks, there are plenty of benefits we got from the lockdown. Seeing as the work in the digital marketing industry is mostly done online, making the switch to working from home was not difficult and operations continued to run smoothly through this time.
People are using social media as a means of gaining and sharing information during this time. Nielsen Holdings, a data and information measurement firm, reported that there has been a 50X increase in social media activity since January. This means that many clients of digital marketing firms continued to have an online presence for which content is curated, all while working remotely. Hugh Loren, art director and co-founder at ThinkTree Media said, “Curating content while working remotely was tricky, but we found innovative ways to churn out the best possible content that we could, with the resources we had available.”
Real estate and interior design clients were able to see quality leads during this time, which was an added bonus. For the other clients, the extra time was used to strategize and plan for the months to follow.
Lanwin Pais, cofounder at ThinkTree Media said, “Advertisements on Google and Facebook saw a decrease, giving digital marketing companies a benefit, seeing as the bids had reduced invariably the cost for the ads reduced as well.” For smaller brands, this was the perfect time to increase visibility without increasing their ad budgets.
While this is a new advent for digital marketing, it is best to hope that the global situation gets better soon. Consumer behaviour will no doubt change, interests will change and social media activity will see different patterns. But, adapting strategies to this change while still being sensitive to the situation will be a priority for all digital marketing firms.
