Hyundai is known for its cars and, in recent months, its robots too. What’s lesser-known is that, for three years, it’s been repurposing old vehicle materials to incorporate into its fashion venture. That’s right, the South Korean automaker is no stranger to making clothing.
For the 2021 edition of its annual Re:Style collection, Hyundai Motor Company has joined hands with fashion stores L’Eclaireur and Boontheshop to deliver 12 eco-friendly wearable items from discarded car manufacturing pieces.

This year, the trio utilized car airbags and seatbelts to create garments like track jackets, sweatshirts, zipper hoodies, and pants. Sustainable components used in the Hyundai IONIQ 5, like “Bio PET and recycled fibers,” were also added to make the clothing more wearable as well as illustrate the potential of biomaterials in fashion.

“With the third annual celebration of Re:Style this year, Hyundai Motor Company continues its dedication to facilitate the ‘progress for humanity,’ its brand vision and objective,” details the company’s global chief marketing officer Thomas Schemera. “We are stepping up our collaborations steadily with various industries around the world to usher in a sustainable future.”

“The Re:Style 2021 is one of them, and we hope this project serves as a focal point for young consumers worldwide to understand the impact of manufacturing leftover materials on our shared environment and how we can creatively and practically reutilize them,” Schemera continues.
The 12 pieces will be sold in limited quantities at the two fashion stores, both of which are also working to limit their environmental footprint in fashion. Proceeds from the sale will support Hyundai Motor’s future sustainability initiatives.
