In the dynamic world of digital marketing, change is the only constant. As we approach the middle of 2023, it’s clear that the pace of change isn’t slowing down. This month has been packed with updates and shifts from major players in the industry that digital marketers need to stay on top of.
Google Analytics 4 Allows for More Choice in Conversion Credit Eligibility for Google Ads
In a major update, Google is rolling out changes to give advertisers better insights into conversion performance. For the first time, marketers working with GA4 will be able to choose which of their channels should be eligible to get conversion credit for web conversions shared with Google Ads. This applies to Google paid channels and paid and organic channels.
This new capability will offer valuable insights into which channels contribute to a conversion, helping marketers better understand and measure the impact of their campaigns. This data will prove incredibly useful to advertisers as they’ll be able to create new strategies to increase conversions and revenue with more confidence and certainty.
The channels eligible for conversion credit are categorized into two types: Google paid channels, where only Google Ads paid channels are eligible to receive conversion credit, and paid and organic channels, where both are eligible to receive conversion credit, but only credit assigned to Google Ads channels will appear in your Google Ads accounts. Advertisers should note that the default channel is Google paid channels, however, marketers do have the option to choose PPC and organic channels instead.
To change the settings, in Google Analytics, this setup can be edited at any time by going to the Admin > Attribution settings page. Once you have updated your preferences, changes will take effect on conversions moving forward.
Microsoft’s Policy Updates
Microsoft is urging marketers to review and adjust their ad campaigns as it prepares to roll out a major policy update starting July 1. These changes are expected to have a significant impact on marketers, especially those working in sectors such as health and gambling.
Some of the key policy updates include the approval of vitamin and supplement ads, the approval of gambling ads (with certain restrictions and requirements), a ban on gambling ads in Belgium, restrictions on gambling ads in Ireland, and a global ban on ads promoting clinical trials or experimental treatments starting from August 1.
Microsoft has also given some insight into how these updates will impact Microsoft Ads accounts including ad and ad component disapprovals, store or product disapprovals, the introduction of a three-strike violation policy, and immediate suspension penalty for egregious violations. The company has stated that these changes are meant to provide greater visibility for advertisers and users and help them reach greater audiences while aligning with upcoming regulatory changes.
ChatGPT Credentials: 100,000 Accounts Leaked
In a significant cybersecurity incident, over 100,000 OpenAI ChatGPT account credentials were compromised and sold on dark web marketplaces from June 2022 to May 2023. Info stealers such as Raccoon, Vidar, and RedLine have been identified as largely responsible for these breaches. This has led to a call for enhanced password practices and two-factor authentication to prevent further breaches.
This incident has had a widespread impact, affecting users worldwide, with the highest number of stolen credentials traced back to India. Other countries significantly impacted include Pakistan, Brazil, Vietnam, Egypt, the U.S., France, Morocco, Indonesia, and Bangladesh.
The incident underscores the risks associated with the integration of AI like ChatGPT into business operations and highlights the need for improved cybersecurity practices. Users are advised to follow proper password safety practices and secure their accounts with two-factor authentication (2FA).
