While most marketing is meant to make a long-term impression, Twitter is introducing a concept that feels a bit Snapchatty. Meanwhile, Instagram may be finding inspiration in another platform, and Facebook gives Messenger a back-end facelift. Here are this week’s trending stories in social media.
Twitter Introduces the Fleets Feature
Twitter is joining the Stories party by introducing a called “fleets.” This moniker is interesting, to say the least. Twitter group product manager, Mo Aladham, says fleets are, “a new way to start conversations from your fleeting thoughts.” Fleets will last 24 hours, and what’s most surprising is you cannot like or retweet fleets! That may deter some, but you might consider it a new way to engage with your audience on the Twitter platform.
As you may already know, the life of a tweet is short, but fleets allow you to share content for a longer period of time in a prominent place at the top of the app. You may find that the layout is eerily similar to Instagram, but that means it is not a foreign feature to regular users. What is foreign is where this feature is being tested: Brazil. For now, this feature is only available in Brazil, and perhaps we may see it spread across the globe. Stay tuned.

Facebook Updates Messenger for iOS
Facebook is always seeking ways to make life easier, and luckily for iOS users, they have released a faster, simpler version of Facebook Messenger. If you use Facebook Messenger to communicate with customers or friends, this change will be quite helpful. CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes it will feel quicker and easier to respond to messages than ever before, and , “Messenger will be one quarter the size and load twice as fast.”
Facebook rewrote the code for Messenger to make this change. With more speed and less space, the app has some features temporarily suspended, although it is not clear which ones did not make the cut. However, Facebook intends to bring those features back eventually. Will iOS users be pleased with this version of Messenger?
88% of Facebook users are on the platform to stay in contact with friends and family.
