NASA’s Lucy spacecraft is scheduled to launch in October 2021, as part of the first mission to the Trojan asteroids near the planet Jupiter.
Recently, the space organization unveiled a plaque, which will act as a time capsule, with words of wisdom to inspire humanity in the future.
According to CNET, the spacecraft had been named ‘Lucy’ after the fossil skeleton of a human ancestor, though it was also inspired in part by The Beatles’ Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.
Hence, part of the plaque is inscribed with quotes from band members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison.
“And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make,” reads the quote by McCartney. “We all shine on… like the moon and the stars and the sun,” says the message credited to Lennon.
Starr quips, “Peace and love,” while Harrison is quoted: “When you’ve seen beyond yourself then you may find peace of mind is waiting there.”
Other famous persons join The Beatles on the plaque meant for future humans, including Albert Einstein, poet Joy Harjo, author Kazuo Ishiguro, Martin Luther King Jr, Brian May of the band Queen, Yoko Ono, and Carl Sagan.
Lucy will be visiting the asteroids along Jupiter’s path, studying the objects so we can learn more about the history of the solar system back here on Earth. With such lofty goals for a mission, it’s sure to rely on Einstein’s quote for some inspiration.
“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day. Never lose a holy curiosity. Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value. He is considered successful in our day who gets more out of life than he puts in. But a man of value will give more than he receives.”
