Nike has released a film, titled We Play Real, to celebrate Black women in sport. The film was launched on International Women’s Day.
Narrated by actress Dominique Fishback, the clip celebrates Black women and their accomplishments, and their resilience and strength in driving change in the world. The clip features athletes like Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Simone Manuel, Sheryl Swoopes, Seimon Augustus, and Diamond Deshields.
The video also highlights how these women have used their platforms to speak about racial justice. For example, Naomi Osaka wore a mask with Breonna Taylor’s name at the US Open back in September to draw attention to the unjust killing.
In addition to the video, Nike will also be holding a social campaign to elevate Black voices, as well as work to launch a competition with Black Girl Ventures, a non-profit organization that aims to provide women of color access to community and capital, per Footwear News.
Nike will also be investing US$500,000 in Black Girl Ventures and continue to deliver content that celebrates Black women and demonstrate how to build a more inclusive culture throughout 2021.
