Last week, OnlyFans shocked the online community by announcing that explicit material would be banned from the platform, starting October.
The new rules were in response to requests from the app’s financial partners, with the site saying it would “prohibit the posting of any content containing sexually explicit conduct.”
The platform has amassed over 130 million users to date, with most of its creators producing adult content. In an email sent out to users following the announcement, OnlyFans highlighted its new Acceptable Use Policy, which creators would have to adhere to going forward.
According to Input, users are no longer permitted to upload content featuring “actual or simulated sexual intercourse,” including an entire list of what constitutes such acts. Additionally, all content previously uploaded that violates the new guidelines has to be removed before December 1, 2021.
The new rules indicate that “sexually explicit content” will cover “actual or simulated sexual intercourse or masturbation, any exhibition of private parts, and actual or simulated material depiction bodily fluids.”
However, to make things even more confusing, the email said “content containing nudity will continue to be allowed as long as it is consistent with the policy.” With the long list of explicit content that’s now prohibited, it’s a head-scratcher for creators figuring out what kind of “nudity” OnlyFans will allow.
As to why the platform was suddenly banning most of its user base’s content, the company said that “the new rules are necessary to comply with the requirements of these financial institutions and are the only way to help ensure the long-term sustainability of OnlyFans.”
Strangely, in a bit of a trackback, with many content creators understandably upset, OnlyFans released a statement on its Twitter account, thanking sex workers and saying the site is working “around the clock” to come up with solutions for adult content creators.
Will adult content creators take their businesses to other platforms, or will OnlyFans be able to keep hold of its huge user base? It remains to be seen how this situation unfolds in the next several weeks.

Dear Sex Workers,
The OnlyFans community would not be what it is today without you.
The policy change was necessary to secure banking and payment services to support you.
We are working around the clock to come up with solutions.#SexWorkIsWork
