Of all dimensions, this might be one of the rare few where Rick and Morty’s Jerry Smith is deemed an asset. In an unexpected turn of events, Morty’s perpetually unemployed father—who’s not exactly the brightest bulb in the box—has been “hired” by DDB FTW Worldwide, the gaming and esports wing of marketing communications giant DDB.
Welcoming Jerry as its new Creative Director, DDB FTW shared the one aspect of this entire episode that makes sense: “To produce unexpected work, we need unexpected talent.” It added that the character “brings years of interdimensional experience to the table. Welcome on board!”
If it hasn’t sunk in, Jerry Smith has a LinkedIn account. However, Ad Age points out that the identity of the person behind the account is unknown.
The LinkedIn account plays on the plot in the fourth episode of the first season, where Jerry ends up in a dumbed-down simulation of Earth. Unaware of the differences, Jerry attends a presentation for the Apple Farmers of America—a spin on this dimension’s Dairy Farmers of America—and impresses his audience with his “Hungry for Apples?” slogan. The tagline, of course, is a play on the iconic “Got Milk?” line.
The campaign propels Jerry into a leading adman overnight, and it’s probably why DDB FTW recruited him. (Wait. Is this a simulation of Earth?)
“I’m just very excited to be back in the industry after all these years of struggle,” the account told Ad Age. “And I can’t thank everyone enough who helped me land this opportunity. Get ready, Appley Awards, Jerry is back!”
True to the character, this version of Jerry Smith had been reaching out to creative agencies to consider hiring him. He even has a legitimate-looking portfolio website detailing his past projects in advertising.
The account continues to share updates regularly, even after advancing into a top-level role.
While it’s unlikely that he’s on chummy terms with this dimension’s version of Rick, Jerry seems to be friends with Doofus Rick, who has left a LinkedIn recommendation describing him as “interdimensionally talented.”
