Just when you thought there couldn’t be any more brands joining the non-fungible token (NFT) world, here comes Starbucks.

Starbucks Odyssey is a new loyalty program centered around collecting digital tokens. Each member can buy or collect NFT stamps, as the brand calls them, that will unlock different levels of rewards with each milestone.

This new branch into Web3 from the coffee brand is its own way of digitizing the ‘Third Place’, which is what Starbucks refers to as the alternative place for you to spend time outside of your home and work.

Odyssey allows customers to collect tokens by completing quizzes and games—or ‘journeys’—on the dedicated website to earn ‘journey stamps’. Though, if you wish, you could just buy the stamps directly. Each NFT comes with its own rarity, which will be valued by the company. The rarer the stamp, the more points you will receive. You can also trade stamps with fellow members.

Starbucks is also making sure that the new venture complies with its sustainable efforts as Odyssey will be hosted on a “proof-of-state” blockchain built by Polygon, which uses less carbon and energy than the first-generation “proof-of-work” blockchain.

As you begin collecting points, different rewards will be unlocked. This includes invites to real-world events held at Starbucks Reserve Roasteries, digital events such as a virtual martini-making experience, or even a trip to Costa Rica to see how the company roasts its beans.

Incorporating NFTs into a brand is not a new idea. However, Starbucks does claim it is among the first brands to weave them into its membership program.

For those looking to join Odyssey, there is currently a waitlist you can sign up for.
