The day in the life of a: Digital Marketing Manager, our chat with Morgan Paley – Estrella Green

Considering last month’s Social Media Week Bristol, Moxie & Mettle understand digital marketing is more important today more than ever before. Therefore, we wanted to chat with some digital marketing experts about their experiences within their roles.

So, meet Morgan Paley, he is the Digital Marketing Manager at Estrella Green, a strategic marketing agency working with technology companies to drive revenue and build brand equity. Morgan talks us through his journey so far, his experiences agency vs client-side, and the setbacks he’s had to overcome transitioning from Product Design to Marketing.

Moxie & Mettle: Tell us about your career journey; how have you got to where you are now?

Morgan Paley: I studied Product Design at University which I didn’t necessarily enjoy, but I certainly don’t regret. Through the course, I was able to learn how to use multiple software packages and took a considerable interest in graphic design. After graduating, I took the first job I could as a graphic designer. Working closely with the sales and marketing team, I discovered digital marketing and worked towards eventually becoming the executive for the company. I wanted to push myself and felt that I was working in the wrong industry, so after a few months of travelling, I applied to a marketing agency who specialises in technology.

Moxie & Mettle: What are your day-to-day activities as a Digital Marketing Manager?

Morgan Paley: My role at the moment is very unique as given my background I do a lot of design work on a daily basis, I also support our designer on the larger, strategic projects. I have three of my own accounts, so I have to communicate and manage their expectations. My main focus is to manage, carry out and report on campaigns agreed every quarter.

Moxie & Mettle: What has been the most important thing you have learnt throughout your career?

Morgan Paley: It’s not what you know, but who you know… but it helps if you know a bit!

Moxie & Mettle: Have you had any setbacks? How did you overcome them?

Morgan Paley: Finishing University and finding a job that I wanted was challenging, which was mainly due to having very little experience in the industry. To overcome this, I had to accept that the role I took was never going to be permanent and was purely to gain experience.

Moxie & Mettle: Are there any benefits of working agency compared to in-house in your opinion?

Morgan Paley: Working at an agency is much more exciting as I am working with businesses in multiple industries. That being said, the workload is a lot higher than being in-house!

Moxie & Mettle: What advice can you share that might help those who are looking to pursue a career in digital marketing?

Morgan Paley: Get as much design experience as you can, it will do you a huge favour.

Moxie & Mettle: In your opinion, what are the top 3 skills it takes to succeed as a Digital Marketing Manager?

Morgan Paley: Communication, confidence and the ability to manage expectations.
