Women’s History Month: The Women of the Advertising Agency

March is Women’s History Month! Women have always been some of the most influential figures in the marketing and advertising industry. For the last century, women have always been prominent people in the industry; In 2022, nearly half of the advertising managers in the United States were women. Women often have a better idea of what people are looking for in an ad—85% of purchases are made by women. From the 1950’s to today, women continue to contribute some of the most innovative and creative ad campaigns.

One of the Most Influential Women in the Advertising Agency

Mary Wells Lawrence is one of the most prominent names in the industry. Born in 1928, she jumped into her marketing career at an early age as a copywriter at a department store. In the 1950’s, she relocated to New York City and joined the McCann Erickson team, leading the copywriting department.

She continued her work in various agencies and created some of the most popular advertisements in history. Some of her notable works include “I LOVE NYC,” “Trust the Midas touch,” and Alka Seltzer’s “Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz.” She is just one of the many women that have left their mark on the industry.

Our Women in Advertising

Cassie Rogers is currently our Vice President of Media at Media Venue. She was born in central Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky for college where she graduated with a degree in Education. After college, she fell into her first marketing job—a job that she turned into a career. Her sorority sister set her up with a marketing position at her husband’s job, and the rest is history!

She joined SNS Tires, a local tire wholesaler and retailer in Lexington, in 1999. In 2016, she joined the Media Venue team originally as a Senior Media Buyer and was later promoted to Digital Marketing Director, and now the Director of Media. Some of her favorite moments working at Media Venue include going to the Honda Power Equipment Dealer Show in Las Vegas. This trip was so successful that they returned for the Honda Marine Dealer Show!

Working in the Industry

Cassie’s favorite part of working in the marketing and advertising industry is the client interaction and flexibility. She loves being able to do something different every day. Cassie says she often works on multiple projects throughout the week, including working on creative, campaign planning, and meeting with clients. Working at Media Venue allows her to create her own path for executing plans and creative ideas, while collaborating with her co- workers, Cassie says. Cassie says that one of the best parts of the Media Venue team is that “everybody’s opinions are valued.”

For those just starting out in the industry, Cassie recommends going in without any set expectations. Every agency and marketing positions will do things differently, and it’s important to make sure that you’re in a good environment. One of the biggest pieces of advice Cassie offers is to be open to working in an office environment, in- person. Working remotely, “creativity doesn’t flow as much because you’re not collaborating,” Cassie says. The learning experiences you earn in an office are some of the most valuable lessons.
