Last year, beer brand Corona unveiled special plans to build Corona Island, an island getaway that would champion a lifestyle of wellness and sustainability.
Now, it seems the company has made good on its promise with the announcement of the grand opening of the eco-destination, located off the coast of Colombia.
Described as a “first-of-its-kind paradise,” the island will encourage guests to reconnect with nature through immersive experiences, all while never using single-use plastic products.
To dream up this escapade, Corona partnered international nonprofit Oceanic Global to officially create the world’s first Blue Verified island, which has been certified as a three-star plastic-free locale.
The Blue Seal means the resort has officially eliminated the use of single-use plastic, and will adopt eco-friendly operating practices on its shores—including construction, energy production, food sourcing, and even guest experiences.
“On Corona Island, we are celebrating the majesty and beauty of the outdoors by getting guests engaged in protecting paradise. We look forward to welcoming visitors, rekindling their relationship with nature, and hopefully creating more advocates to protect our natural world,” quipped Felipe Ambra, Global Vice President for Corona.
Design-wise, the island tapped into the vision of architectural firm James & Mau and local architect Jairo Márquez, with its leisure programs curated by former Miss Universe Paulina Vega.
Plus, Oceanic Global’s Blue School will offer educational workshops for guests, while locally-sourced and sustainable menus have been created by Christopher Carpentier, a chef who featured as a judge on MasterChef Colombia.
“Oceanic Global is honored to help develop the Corona Island experience and applauds Corona’s sector-leading sustainability efforts,” said Lea d’Auriol, Founder of Oceanic Global.
“We’re proud to have worked with Corona from the beginning of the project to ensure that this sustainable destination demonstrates how travelers can experience paradise for both leisure and educational purposes, while leaving a minimal trace behind.”
