An ancient Roman villa—or what’s left of it—has stood the test of time and is destined to be around longer. After it was unearthed a year ago in England, heritage experts are now having it reburied, as per the recommendation of the government-owned Historic England. The craftsmanship of the structure is undisputed, leaving archaeologists to believe that it was built by respected architects for the elite.
The area, in today’s Scarborough, was intended to be cleared for new housing, and that’s when the villa was discovered. Archaeologists from the MAP Archaeological Practice had dug up the time capsule while surveying the land.
The complex had several rooms all held in a circular main room, along with a luxury bathhouse equivalent to the size of two tennis courts, reports. Its expansive proportions and impeccable quality told researchers that this was a home for the wealthy or a religious site, and that it was designed by well-known architects before being constructed by trusted craftsmen.

Archaeologists appreciate that the remnants have survived long enough to offer a window into the Roman Empire’s occupation of historical Britain.

Keith Emerick, an inspector of ancient monuments at Historic England, added: “These archaeological remains are a fantastic find and are far more than we ever dreamed of discovering at this site. They are already giving us a better knowledge and understanding of Roman Britain.”
As such, the ancient dwelling has now been reburied to be retained for the admiration of future generations, according to the .
And sitting above the “first-of-its-kind” site will be an “interpretive depiction” of the home to honor the priceless find, confirms Keepmoat, the developer that was meant to be in charge of building housing in the space.
