A road trip through the mountain ranges of America sounds like the perfect getaway—but what happens when you’re caught mid-drive winding through the valley and your electric car dies on you?

To help allay the fears of those with electric cars, and possibly encourage many others to make the switch, President Joe Biden is planning to invest US$5 billion in a new scheme that would see charging stations pop up along interstate highways and major rural roads.

The program is in a bid to drive Americans away from their gas-powered cars and to show them how convenient electric vehicles can be.

According to , Biden plans to link urban and rural areas all throughout America with a new network of charging stations. 500,000 chargers are slated to be erected from coast to coast.

Participating states are given a deadline of until August 1 to provide the presiding body over the bill with how they plan to implement the chargers. The United States can begin building the charging bases as early as this fall.

General Motors and Ford have been working with EV charging companies such as Blink, EVgo, and Electrify America LLC to provide convenient locations for drivers to power up their cars. However, the focus has mainly been on urban areas and has since left out the vast rolling lands of the American countryside.

The chargers will be added to rest stops and gas stations along the highways, as well as restaurants and other services. GM and EVgo have already begun work on the scheme and are planning to add 500 charging blocks at different Pilot FlyingJ centers.
