As part of this year’s DC FanDome fan event, scheduled to take place next month, DC has announced that it will give away free non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for some of its well-loved superheroes, including Batman, Wonder Woman, and Harley Quinn.

NFTs are digital collectibles with a traceable, verifiable ownership. Now, they’re taking the form of beloved comic book covers in the collection releasing October 5.

These come in different tiers: Common, like Woman Woman No. 1 (1987) by George Peréz; Rare, like Nubia and the Amazons No. 1 (2021) by Alitha Martinez; and Legendary, such as Future State: Wonder Woman No. 1 (2021) by Jenny Frison.

A free NFT is available to fans who sign up for DC FanDome, sort of like an invitation, DC explains. Then, by sharing the NFT on their social media, users could unlock a second one to add to their collection, entirely free of charge.

This is DC’s first batch of NFTs, handpicked by DC’s Publisher and Chief Creative Officer, Jim Lee. “This drop pays homage to our 87-year history,” he states. It’s simultaneously “visualizing a future in which NFTs play a foundational role in novel ways of interacting with DC content and unlocking new experiences.”

Partnering with DC is Palm NFT Studio, an Ethereum-based studio with a more eco-friendly approach to manufacturing these tokens. It has been said that its blockchain uses 99.99% less energy usage compared to others on the market.

“It’s immensely rewarding to work with a partner like DC who understands that blockchain is more than a technology,” says Palm Co-Founder Dan Heyman. “It’s a sustainable storytelling tool that can reshape the relationship between creators and fans.”

Last year, the event surpassed 22 million global views in around 24 hours. This year, organizers predict that the number will only go up.

Because of the expected size of the event, DC states that this will most probably be “one of the largest NFT drops ever,” and the first “large-scale virtual event with registration powered by NFTs.”
