As of July 29, 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a total of 196,823,583 confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide, resulting in 4,203,834 deaths. By July 26, 2021, a total of 4,197,410,396 vaccine doses had been administered globally.

In Egypt, as of July 2021, a little over 38.4 million people had been fully vaccinated, according to national figures.

Despite the global supply of COVID-19 vaccines, successful rollout, and uptake of vaccines depend on various factors beyond their availability. Therefore, it was crucial to promote vaccine acceptance and demand, particularly among high-priority use groups and at-risk populations.

The WHO SAGE Roadmap for Prioritizing Use of COVID-19 Vaccines identified adults with comorbidities, such as diabetes and hypertension, as a high-priority use group for the vaccines. The updated COVID-19 global vaccination strategy emphasized the urgent need to strengthen and accelerate vaccination progress for priority risk groups with primary series and booster doses. People affected by or living with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) were at higher risk of developing severe illness or dying from COVID-19.

In Egypt, NCDs, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases, constituted a significant burden and were estimated to be the leading national cause of death.

The objective of the campaign had been to create specific social media messaging for a large portion of people in Egypt living with NCDs to encourage demand for COVID-19 vaccinations within these groups. The campaign focused on five health issues: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, cancer, and mental health. The campaign had been in close coordination with the Ministry of Health and Population and UNICEF.
