The 20th century saw a boom in the fruit-growing business in the US, and farmers who saw its potential began working with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to grow all sorts of orchards across the country. Before photography was possible, the federal department commissioned about 65 American artists to complete technically accurate imagery depicting thousands of fruit varieties between 1886 and 1942.

The USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection, pomology referring to the “science and practice of growing fruit, features over 7,500 high-resolution drawings, paintings and wax models of heirloom and experimental fruit grown in the US during those years. The collection was released to the public in 2015, according to Open Culture.

There is no restriction for the use of these images, but attribution is required. Browse through the full vibrant collection here.

If you’d like to spend the downtime working on your retouching skills, this collection by photography education platform Signature Edits is a fantastic resource to do that. The selection, inspired by now-defunct RAW photo provider WeSaturate, comprises over 100 free RAW files you can use without limitations for both personal and commercial use.

The creators recount on the website that picking up photo editing in the beginning “was hard enough,” so they decided to roll out a collection filled with RAW photos, which retain every original detail captured by the camera, for free download so both budding and pro creatives alike can hone their skills.

“Signature Edits grants you an irrevocable, nonexclusive, worldwide copyright license to download, copy, modify, distribute, perform, and use raw files from Signature Edits for free, including for commercial purposes, without permission from or attributing the photographer or Signature Edits,” the platform explains.
